KUALA LUMPUR: MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu has called on the Indian community to set aside their differences, unite and speak with one voice.
In his Deepavali message, he said, for the sake of future generations, Indians must not cast aspersions on each other to the extent of dividing the community.
“Let us put our energy, mind and resources to bring about the transformation needed to face a globalised and borderless world,” said Samy Vellu.
It was time for the Indian community to work together to overcome the global economic recession, and their thoughts and strengths must be unified, he added.
He said that they must not “be in a state of denial” and deny that the Indian community had achieved progress in all fields.
“They must also be mindful that there is a section within the community that still lags behind economically and socially.
“This is where our focus should be.
“The ordinary Indians have placed their trust and future on their leaders. They look to us for guidance and to improve their living conditions.
“So let us do our work and not be engaged in unnecessary squabbles,” he said.
He hoped this Deepavali would enlighten the humanity in all the Indians in Malaysia, adding “let us move forward and maintain the racial unity”.
Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and Indus-try president Datuk Kenneth Eswa-ran said the Deepavali celebration should not be restricted to the Indian community.
“I hope every Malaysian will consider this as our very own Malaysian festival.
“I am positive that it will help prosper the relationship and further strengthen our ties in the Bangsa Malaysia tradition,” he said in his Deepavali message.
Eswaran also hoped that entrepreneurs and the country would be blessed with enough resilience to “sail through the current volatile financial market and the global economic scenario”.

Many Tamil schools in Malaysia lack one of the most basic education item. Books. Tamil schools, especially partially aided and privately aided schools, often have to stretch their dollars and cents so thin, that they simply cannot afford to stock their libraries, if they have one, that is. Yet, Tamil schools students have time and again proven that they can rise above the odds and compete at par with their government school peers.
Putera MIC wants to give these children a little bit to cheer about. We want to give them encouragement. We want to give them hope to excel. We know that the Indian community can only excel through education. We ask not for money, we ask only for your old, used books, sitting in a box somewhere in your storeroom, collecting dust.
Putera MIC is embarking on a two-month campaign to collect books, to be donated to Tamil school libraries around the country. We call upon kind hearted Malaysians to give us any books, as long as they are still readable and suitable for 7 to 13 year olds. If you have a sizeable amount of books, we'll even come over and pick it up from you. You may donate textbooks, reference books, dictionaries, storybooks, anything. Whatever you can afford to part with.
We have been operating for slightly more than a year, funding our activities from our own pockets mostly. We will continue doing so. We ask not a cent from you. We will fork out what is needed for the logistics of this campaign from our own pockets. But we humbly ask you to donate your books to us. Nothing more.
Our Objective
To help strengthen libraries in SRJK(T) in various par of the country
To encourage reading habits among indian students studying in SRJK(T) by provising free books
To nurture reading as hobby among students in the SRJK(T).
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has agreed to consider the MIC’s appeal to release the five Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leaders detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA), MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said.
“The prime minister has promised to discuss the matter with Home Minister, (Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar) and arrive at a decision,” he said in a statement here yesterday.
Samy Vellu and Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, who is also the MIC secretary-general had a 30-minute meeting with Abdullah in Putrajaya.
He said the meeting was to seek the immediate release of the five, R. Kengadharan, M. Manoharan, V. Ganabatirau, P. Uthayakumar and K. Vasantha Kumar.
“Abdullah informed me that he will study the situation and recommend appropriate action. We have full faith and trust in the prime minister and we believe he will do something positive on this matter,” Samy Vellu said.
He said that he had explained the reasons for the unconditional release of the five who had been detained for almost nine months now.
"Some of them also need medical attention although we have been told that proper care is being given to them," he said.
Samy Vellu said their families have also suffered enough and that they should be allowed to return home to look after their families.
"It is about time that they are released as they pose no danger to the security of the country," he said.
He said that with the release, it would help "reduce the tension" within the Indian community.
"I am also being heavily pressured by MIC leaders and members to secure their release. Today, I have spoken to the prime minister and I can assure the MIC members that something good will prevail," he said.
Samy Vellu also said he would raise the matter again at the next Barisan Nasional supreme council meeting and also seek the backing of all the BN leaders to secure their release.
